U.S. Department of Energy Updates External Adapter Test Procedure (Effective September 19, 2022)

On August 19, 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued an announcement to update the energy efficiency testing procedures for external adapters (EPS). The new procedures will take effect on September 19, 2022 and will be mandatory on February 15, 2023.

The main updates are as follows:

Updated the definition of external adapter, does not include commercial industrial power;

2. The DOE scope of application of EPS has been updated to exclude that the main load of internal conversion voltage is not an external adapter that supplies power to individual terminal products. For example, the conversion voltage in the product is mainly to supply power to its own functions, including but not limited to: consumer electronic products with USB output terminals and lighting products with USB output;

3. Update the requirements of the output line, use the output line of the adapter or the output line recommend by the manufacturer to do the test. If the adapter does not have an output line and the manufacturer does not have an recommend line, then use a 3-foot-long output line to do the test;

The test method of EPS is divided into two categories, the fifth part is the test method of non-adaptive EPS, and the sixth part is the test method of adaptive EPS;

For single voltage multiple output external adapter, reference to the built-in power test method to calculate the coefficient D;

6. A detailed description of non-EPS functions has been added, allowing testing after disconnecting non-EPS functions without affecting EPS functions.

After September 19, 2022, the regulation will enter into force, when the latest regulation will be adopted, DOE reports will be issued and submitted to the DOE CCMS system. After February 15, 2023, all certified external power adapters need to start DOE standard upgrade work as soon as possible. CTC technical experts suggest that you organize the list of certified models of relevant external power adapters as soon as possible to start upgrade certification work.
